Lectoraat Biobased Resources & Energy + Departamento de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental (DESA)
This is a pre-approved Emerging Markets internship for BSc students. Ideally, this internship takes place between March and August 2020.
In the state of Minas Gerais, a lot of organic household waste is produced (GFT). Some of this household waste is composted, but most of the organic waste is brought to landfills. The organic waste that is composted usually does not result in a product that can be sold due to contamination with plastics and/or metal particles.
It is a pity that the organic household waste is not processed in a proper way because valuable products can be made from this stream. Besides compost, other possible products from organic household waste are biogas (biomethane) and energy pellets.
The lectoraat Biobased Energy together with the Brazilian university UFMG and two Dutch SMEs (Dutch Waste Management, Virida) want to perform a demonstration project in a city in Brazil to show the possibilities for a good collection and treatment of municipal organic waste. However, before this can be done it is important to know more about what market exists for the products from organic waste. Who are the possible buyers, what is the competition etc. This is the topic of this internship.
The first part of the internship will be at the Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy in Breda. In this time you will get familiar with the project and prepare for the second part of the internship in Brazil. In the second part of your internship at the Departamento de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental (UFMG, Minas gerais, Brazil) you will perform the market research doing interviews and literature search.
